What a Kid Golfer’s Equipment Should Be
70
Golf has really risen in popularity over the years. Both men and women have fallen in love with this great game for mixing simple pleasure, competitive play and the great outdoors. It used to be enjoyed by adults only but as time went by, more and more kids have been seriously taking up golf as a sport too.
Today, golf's popularity among the younger crowd is evident by the countless junior golf clubs that are available in the market. But what buyers like yourself should realize is that getting just any random junior golf set at the store does not necessarily guarantee a better game play for a young golfer. You need to be aware that there are certain factors that must be considered in order for every kid to achieve a better game in this wonderful sport.
The Right Club Length
Getting the right club length for a kid golfer is very important. As any golfer will tell you, having the right club length is essential to be able to make a great golf swing. If a kid golfer is using a golf club that's too long, they may not be able to rotate their body properly and transfer their weight accordingly.
Make sure to buy a golf club that won't let any kid golfer grip or choke down more than 1 and 1/2 inches. An ideal junior golf club length would be something that only lets them grip down about an inch so they can swing the club properly and also allows them at least a year of use before outgrowing the golf club.
Flexibility of the Shaft or Shaft Flex
Shaft flex is the amount or degree of stiffness of the golf club shaft. The problem with the older models of junior golf clubs was the stiffness of the shaft. This was a natural result of having four to five inches of the golf club's length cut off to make it more suitable for the shorter arms of a kid. The stiffness had a negative effect on kid golfers' game. It caused the ball to fly really low and short no matter how hard or good they swing.
Good thing there are now manufacturers like Ping Junior Golf Clubs which makes golf clubs with shafts that are more suitable for a kid golfer's swing speeds. These carefully designed golf clubs use light weight steel and graphite which makes it more flexible and applicable in a kid's golf game.
The Golf Club's Weight
Another thing that you should consider when you're planning to buy a golf club for a kid golfer is the weight. A kid as we all know is not as strong as an adult. Buying a golf club that is too heavy will be difficult for a kid to carry around, let alone swing. It also causes inconsistency in the young golfer's swings which might frustrate and demoralize them altogether.
The best thing to do in this matter is to go to a store and have the kid try out different golf clubs. Try to see which golf club lets them swing properly and without difficulty.
The Golf Club’s Grip Size
One last thing that you should consider is the golf club's grip size. Adult golfers never really paid much attention to grip size before. It took them a while to realize that a golf club's grip size can really affect the effectiveness of a golfer's swing. A grip that is too small will likely make the club twist in the hands while a grip that is too large can make a club loose at impact.
The same also goes for kid golfers. Make sure your kid's golf clubs are fitted with the correct grip size. Having a grip size that your kid is really comfortable with can significantly improve their game.
